Pam Munoz Ryan was born on December 25, 1951. She was born and raised in Bakersfield,

While her children were very young, Pam was a stay at home mother. She returned to college to get her master's degree in education. One of her professor had asked her if she ever considered
professional writing. At that same time, a colleague at her children's school asked her if she would help her write a book. It was at this time that Pam couldn’t stop thinking about the possibility of writing her own stories.
I think that Pam Munoz wrote about her grandmother's experiences because they had such an great influence on her life. She grew up listening to these stories and experiences which help shaped the life her grandmother was teaching and giving her. I feel that in her own creative mind she wrote the book as a acknowledgment to her grandmother for the inspiration she instilled in Pam.
